Question:

What are the title insurance licensing requirements for a notary?

Answer:

Notary signing agents will have to satisfy their state title insurance licensing requirements before they could practice as Title Insurance Producer and conduct business within the state. This new requirement applies for many of the states.

General Title Insurance Producer License Requirements

  • Mandatory pre-licensing course (waived in some states if title experience requirement is met). The course will be on compliance, underwriting, escrow, title industry, and professional ethics. It is usually offered through the state Land Title Association and the cost will vary anywhere from $300 to $500;
  • Upon course completion, you will have to pass the state exam for a Title Insurance Producer License;
  • Before your newly obtained license expires, you may have to attend another title insurance continuing education course. For Notaries, some states do not require that you sit an exam.
